At Kaos Custom Bikes, we often have a few of our regulars sunning it up in Europe this time of year on their bike. Here is one such regular Kaos ride, Matt Ryan, and what he’s up to at the moment in France.

I rode from St Saturnin Les Apt over the Provence Ranges to Sault and then 26 km up to top of Mont Ventoux, average grade of last 6 km is 8%. The wind which can blow for days in Provence, is called ‘the Minstrel’ and it was very strong and up higher was ‘blowing hard’. It was very cool also for this time of year and was only 6 degrees on the ranges and 4 degrees on the top of Mt Ventoux.
I started riding at 4.45am. It was 55 km from start to top – took me about 4 hr 30 min aprox. The sun rose at 6.00am. Last year I returned the 55 km in 2 hours, but it was far too windy to do that this year. The last 100 metres, to the top of Mt Ventoux, was un-rideable due to the 100 km/hr gusts of wind.
In fact, I could not even push my bike, on foot, and the isolated peak had one gentleman who came down to help me. Together we pushed thee bike on foot to the top.

I only say ‘a hand full’ of bikers all morning, but later as I was descending there were dozens and dozens of riders struggling up – many of whom, I felt, would not make it.
After taking some photos I started to descend on foot but could not even walk down – the wind was blowing so hard it felt like I would be blown away – bike and all even when walking.
Another gentleman a German helped me to a side track where his car was and said get in warm up and I will drive you down a bit. He drove me down 2 km – but even after that I was still shivering and the descent was very ‘hairy”.

Off to the Alps on Sunday!
